No, I can't hold the right needle stationary

I am primarily a Continental knitter all the way through; I like looping my yarn over my left pointer finger and then going to town on my project. The only time that I've ever used my right hand to hold the yarn is when I do dual stranded colorwork. But on Monday, I decided that I wanted to knit faster, and that that would require me to learn (in this order) how to knit English style and then figure out the Irish Cottage Method. All in one night. Sounds mostly crazy, right? Right. I already knew the rough basics of knitting English style, so that didn't seem to be a problem. But then I started watching youtube videos of Stephanie Pearl-McPhee knitting speedily along using Irish Cottage method , and was amazed at how freaking fast she was going. I wish that I had the luxury of actually taking one of her classes and learning it in person, but I don't think that's going to be possible. After watching the video, I was convinced that my plain old Continental was as primitive and as useless as all get out, so I decided to puzzle out the Irish Cottage Method (spoiler: I failed!). Maybe it was because I was knitting on circular needles, or maybe it's because I don't really understand how to do English, but I just couldn't get the ICM to click! I felt like I was going so slow and forcing my tension to go from passable to absolutely wonky. I also couldn't figure out how to get my fingers to secure around the right hand needle so it's completely stationary; no matter what I did it would wobble around and let stitches escape off the end if I wasn't watching it carefully. So I gave up. I returned to my trusty old Continental ways, grumbling all the while about its slowness compared to English style Irish Cottage. I'm not entirely convinced that I should give up on it, since it seems to be a very useful way to crank out a lot of knitting in just a short amount of time. I'm going to keep experimenting with it and let you know in a few weeks if it has finally clicked or I truly have given up on it! (I'm hoping it's the first one!) If any of you readers out there have accomplished Irish Cottage, let me know in the comments what the heck I might be doing wrong and how I could possibly fix it! Thanks for reading!
